On Progress.

Don’t make it something it isn’t.

It is 10:59 AM on Sunday, February 20th, 2022* and I do not want to write right now.

In fact, I’d much rather be doing just about anything instead of pounding this godforsaken keyboard.

But, the mere fact that I am writing means I am progressing as a writer.

However, most people’s definition of progress sounds more like the definition of a goal.

  • Progress defined is forward or onward movement, as toward a destination.
  • Goal, on the other hand, is defined as the object toward which an endeavor is directed; an end.

Progress is pushing the pea even an inch further across the table.

A goal is getting that pea to the end of the table.

Most people have a goal for each day—and that’s great, don’t get me wrong, I have goals everyday too—but when they “fail” to meet said goal, their emotional bank account takes a huge hit.

Which is sad, because they lose sight of the progress they made and—if they’re anything like me—begin to catastrophize the rest of the day.

As someone who’s done that more times than they’d like to admit, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Here’s what I suggest you do instead: figure out a key performance indicator, (the self-help gurus more commonly refer to them as “KPIs”) and set the bar conservatively low.

Doing so will ensure you hit your KPI even on your worst days.

And if you’re making progress even on your worst days, then all you need is time.

To progress,

Hunter

*The time is actually 7:03 AM on Monday, February 21st, 2022, because I needed a break. But, despite the fact that I was tired, I still made progress by writing yesterday.
